Tuning into Stress Earlier

It’s useful (and important) to determine whether the stress is external—time pressure, too many things to do, lack of money—or our own thoughts, anticipations, or emotions.

Thought patterns. Deepen your awareness of your thought patterns. What stresses you the most? What are deal breakers for you? Learning to recognize the stressors that are most likely to trigger you is an incredibly powerful tool for managing the stress response.

Physical signs of stress. Most of us find that when we become stressed, we can feel ourselves beginning to tense up. How do you experience emotional tension? A clenched jaw? A tension headache? Tightening your abdomen (a “gut reaction”) or feeling like there is a weight on your chest? Do you have less patience, become irritated by interruptions, or speak faster? Does your style of handling conflict reflect the approach to stress in your family, your culture, or your profession? Knowing your own characteristic response could enhance your ability to cope under pressure.
